Winterland is back at Gallagher Way outside of historic Wrigley Field. We took advantage of the beautiful weather Sunday to enjoy holiday activities.
Located just west of the ballpark, the Ice Rink at Gallagher Way is an 8,000-square-foot ice rink. Open through Feb. 20, skaters of all ages can glide under twinkling lights. Skate rentals are available, as are skating and curling lessons. There are also figure-skating performances for those who would rather enjoy the experience as a spectator. In January, ice bumper cars are being added, and I will definitely return for them.
Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville offers other fun. Debuting in 1996, the German-style outdoor market became so popular, it expanded to several locations in Illinois and Wisconsin. The free open market features beverages, food and other products (like ornaments). Through Dec.31 there are live performances and special events like Santa’s Workshop and the Tree Lighting Ceremony.
Every Thursday night in December features a holiday movie. Still to come are Elf and A Christmas Story.
Across the street at Hotel Zachary are other events, including Breakfast with Santa, Teddy Bear Tea and a holiday buffet. There is also Storytime, featuring Juggling Funny Stories with nationally known story-performer Chris Fascione.
The Wrigley Field area no longer sits dormant during the winter months. It comes alive with an open-air entertainment area called “Chicago’s Town Square.”

Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.
