On the Road to Segovia

by Patricia Vanikiotis

Oct 19, 2019

On the first day of our road trip through Spain and Portugal, we set off from Madrid, seeking to take some of the more lightly traveled roads rather than the major highways on our way to Segovia and then on to Burgos. At first our route took us through a very dry landscape, followed by rural areas featuring some pastureland and acres of sunflower fields, with dry, blackened stalks. Gradually we drew close to mountains, and our road began a steady climb in elevation as pine trees became the predominant vegetation. As we neared the summit of the Guadarrama Mountains, we passed through a ski resort town boasting homes and lodges with a distinctly alpine look and a looming ski slope with idle lifts. Quite a change of scenery in only about an hour’s time!

We wound back downhill again and soon came upon the city of Segovia, whose Old Town and aqueduct make up a UNESCO World Heritage site. The two-tiered Roman aqueduct, Segovia, Spainbuilt in the first century A.D., towers above the city square, its arches and large stone blocks (no mortar used!) drawing the eye upward. Segovia, Spain  Segovia, Spain  We set off to climb up to more of Segovia’s attractions. Perched at one end of a rocky bluff is the Alcázar, Segovia, Spain  a medieval castle which has served as a fortress, the royal palace of the kings of Castile, a state prison, a military academy and, currently, a museum. We approached it from one side, following the old walls overlooking vegetable plots below Segovia, Spain   and passing through a large gateway. Segovia, Spain   We didn’t have time to visit the interior, but the castle’s many towers, Segovia, Spain  turrets  Segovia, Spain and its deep moat  Segovia, Spain  truly impressed.

We continued on through narrow, cobbled streets, circling the cathedral Segovia, Spain  and admiring its gargoyle-adorned towers. Segovia, Spain

We eventually made our way back to the aqueduct and prepared to head off on the next leg of our journey. While I was sorry we were able to spend only a few hours here, I was thankful we’d been able to see such fascinating history and architecture during our brief visit. What a great first stop on our travels!

Down to Earth: Find Your Element for the Ultimate Customized Spa Experience at Chuan Spa

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. We headed to The Langham Huntington, Pasadena for the 20th anniversary of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, which meant a jam-packed trip, but I managed to carve a little time out of our busy schedule to visit Chuan Spa at the hotel.

Fukui: A Culture Hub in Rural Japan Worth the Detour

In many cases, less can be more in terms of what smaller cities and small-scale museums have to offer. This is true for Fukui Prefecture, located on the west coast of the main island and best known for its coastline, terrain and quiet towns. While major cities are awash with large-scale museums, bucolic Fukui Prefecture is worth a visit for its assemblage of institutions offering a deeper dive into Japanese life, history and culture.

Come Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas on a Trek in Uganda

Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.
