Mazatlán, Mexico, has long been an attractive home destination for Canadian and American retirees, but, in recent years, young, digital nomads have also discovered the charms of this coastal city, finding inexpensive accommodations, beautiful weather and plenty of bandwidth for working remotely. The laid-back beach scene definitely eases the transition of relocating to Mexico’s West Coast.

Mazatlán allows the mostly youngish crowd to experience the best of both worlds, which include vibrant nightlife with busy bars and clubs in the Golden Zone, a lively tourist neighborhood. The city’s average temperature of 70–80 degrees Fahrenheit from December to March means working from a table at an outdoor café is a realistic expectation.

Mazatlán is one of the oldest ports in America, lined with historic buildings and shops. In the Historic Old Town District, young residents enjoy the open-air market of Mercado Pino Suarez,  opened in 1900, by venturing into the various sections of the market divided by food types. Within a few days of living in Mazatlán, American visitors with pesos in their pockets are speaking Spanish while shopping for dinner and asking the friendly vendors for manzanas, papas, salchichas, pollo, helado and pescado fresco.

For nomads looking for adventure after a few hours at work, there’s some of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches nearby, great for sailing, kayaking or snorkeling. Just minutes off the coast of Mazatlán’s Golden Zone, visitors can take small boats to the Three Islands of Mazatlán, the largest and most accessible being Deer Island, the middle of the three islands. Deer Island is full of vegetation, unique species of mammals and reptiles, and smooth terrain, making it a paradise for hikers. Local tour companies offer various inexpensive tours that may feature a catamaran trip to the islands, a banana boat ride and snorkeling gear rentals.

Mazatlán’s low cost of living makes it easy for digital nomads (and retirees) to live quite comfortably. Those dreaming about having gorgeous sea views from their living space can rent a one-bedroom apartment in or near La Zona Dorada for around $700 per month. Mazatlán also boasts some of the best seafood restaurants in the world.

Comfortable and pleasant co-working spaces such as IQ Work Business Center are located in the New Mazatlán Zone, a venue near many new hotels in the Mazatlán Marina area. Beehive Coliving Community Coworking gets great reviews from digital nomads who have used the space, situated a few streets away from the city’s 12-mile-long beach boardwalk. These spaces give nomads a place to find community, network and enjoy a small taste of office life while working in Mazatlán.

Down to Earth: Find Your Element for the Ultimate Customized Spa Experience at Chuan Spa

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. We headed to The Langham Huntington, Pasadena for the 20th anniversary of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, which meant a jam-packed trip, but I managed to carve a little time out of our busy schedule to visit Chuan Spa at the hotel.

Come Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas on a Trek in Uganda

Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.
