The Peninsula Beverly Hills

Nov 1, 2011
2011 / November 2011

Arrival/Check-in: I checked into the freshly renovated property at the end of the day. The driveway was busy but was made orderly by the parking and front door staff. When I pulled in, a bellhop took my luggage, and I proceeded to the front desk. The check-in clerk told me I had a wonderful junior suite that had been newly renovated. I was on the same floor as the Peninsula Spa, which has a secret entrance to the rooftop bar and restaurant; this was very convenient when I was meeting guests. (29/30)

Guest Quarters: My suite was very comfortable, with a long hallway flanked by a dressing area and closet to the right and the large bathroom on the left. Not much renovation was needed for the bathrooms at the Peninsula, as the pinkish marble and other natural surfaces were still in top shape. Thebathroom had a large tub for premium soaking time and an equally large shower stall. Double sinks and amenities such as Davi body lotion and shampoo added to the experience. Of course, the Peninsula offers a wide variety of personal care items, and the staff is pleased to fetch any other items needed.

The bedroom had a king-sized bed and a personalized pillowcase with “FG” embroidered on it for a special touch. Part of the renovation was a complete redress of the rooms with paint, wallpaper and fabrics. All the furniture and rugs were replaced in keeping with what Peninsula patrons expect. A comfortable desk with all the necessary items was off to the right, and I set up shop there for my stay, conducting a great deal of business from my room. A small sofa and coffee table were close to the window for relaxing, reading or watching the flat-screen TV. (29/30)

Services/Amenities: This is an area where the Peninsula excels over other properties in its competitive niche. I made sure that I entertained at its signature restaurant, The Belvedere; The Roof Garden; and The Club Bar. Not only was the cuisine superior, but also the staff took the establishments to a much higher level. I found the staff at The Belvedere on top of their game as I was entertaining some Global Traveler VIPs that evening. At the more casual Roof Garden, I had dinner with a friend, and everything was wonderful — the pool is a perfect place for relaxing or for an event. The Club Bar has been a mainstay in Beverly Hills ever since the hotel opened. Again, it was the staff (who remembered me from the previous night) and their sense of humor that make travelers feel at home there.

Housekeeping kept my room in order, pressing clothing when needed and making sure all my other needs were attended to. A nice fruit plate was in the room the day I arrived, and the Peninsula has a knack for figuring out guests’ favorites and keeping them supplied. (39/40)

The Experience: I can’t think of a better place in the area. Even with many additions and changes at 5-star properties in Los Angeles, the Peninsula stands out as the consistent shining star.

Total Score: 97/100

Down to Earth: Find Your Element for the Ultimate Customized Spa Experience at Chuan Spa

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. We headed to The Langham Huntington, Pasadena for the 20th anniversary of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, which meant a jam-packed trip, but I managed to carve a little time out of our busy schedule to visit Chuan Spa at the hotel.

Fukui: A Culture Hub in Rural Japan Worth the Detour

In many cases, less can be more in terms of what smaller cities and small-scale museums have to offer. This is true for Fukui Prefecture, located on the west coast of the main island and best known for its coastline, terrain and quiet towns. While major cities are awash with large-scale museums, bucolic Fukui Prefecture is worth a visit for its assemblage of institutions offering a deeper dive into Japanese life, history and culture.

The Argosaronic Islands Are Calling

The Saronic or Argo Saronic Islands of Greece call travelers to explore its seven small islands and islets brimming with history, natural sites and more. With most easily accessible by boat, the islands’ proximity to ports of Athens make the Saronic Islands an ideal destination for those preferring shorter boat rides. In fact, trips from Athens ports to the islands take only between 10 minutes and two hours, depending on the island you choose, making them perfect for day or weekend trips. From Piraeus port, you can access Hydra, Spetses, Aegina and Poros directly. Come explore these stunning islands with us and find the inspiration to plan your next trip to these islands. Hydra Hydra town curves around a slope overlooking the Argosaronic Gulf like an amphitheater and is considered one of the most romantic destinations in Greece. Most unique to the island is its lack of vehicles. People on the island get around on mules and donkeys as well as water taxis, making for a peaceful and laid-back day. Hydra lies a two-hour ferry ride from Piraeus port in Athens.

Come Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas on a Trek in Uganda

Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.
