Bodegas Nabal Visit

As I wrote last week, the first day of our road trip in Spain included a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Segovia. While we could have easily spent a full day there, we left its beautiful old walled city in mid-afternoon in order to make our scheduled visit to a winery. Our route took us through a rural landscape, dotted here and there with small villages and ancient, tiny stone churches, nearly every one boasting a large and jumbled heap of sticks --- a stork's nest --- built upon the steeple or bell tower. As we drew closer to the wine region of Ribero del Duero in the Castilla y León region of northern Spain, we began to see more vineyards. Unlike most vineyards in the States, the vines here were not trellissed but instead each plant stood alone, unsupported.

A Delicious Start to a Great Weekend

If it's the first weekend in May, you can be sure to find my husband and me in Walla Walla, Washington, enjoying the region's Spring Release Weekend. Over the years we've talked it up enough among our Portland wine friends to entice them to come along, and so it was this year that six of us arrived in town on Thursday afternoon. We've learned this early arrival allows us to get a jump on the crowds of oenophiles arriving from Seattle, Portland and elsewhere who, like us, love the fabulous wines made in Eastern Washington. They stand up to anything California produces and often at far more reasonable prices. Plus, this charming town in the heart of wheat country and the Palouse and in sight of the Blue Mountains offers a warm and casual welcome to everyone.

Late Winter Wine Tasting

Earlier this month we enjoyed the chance to try a whole slew of wines from one of our favorite wine regions . . . without having to travel all the way there to do so. Those who have been reading my blog over the past several years know that my husband and I make a trip or two to Walla Walla, Washington, every year to enjoy the wonderful wines (especially reds) produced there. Sunset magazine named Walla Walla the best wine town of 2018, and we wholeheartedly agree.

Savory World of Seneca 2019

I love to cook, and I am always trying new recipes. So much so that when my family asks, “What’s for dinner?” my reply is often, “Something we’ve never had before!” So when the Savory World of Seneca event comes around every year, I jump at the chance to experience new foods. The event, which spans three days, is held at wineries on Seneca Lake, New York. Each member winery features a delicacy from their chosen country, paired with some of their wine.
