Voluntourism on Kaua’i
Hopefully by now you've had the chance to thoroughly dive into our Green Issue, the April edition of Global Traveler, where we explore Earth-friendly destinations, hotels, airlines and initiatives in the world of travel. Coinciding with the issue and with Earth Day just a week away, I thought I'd share with you a suggestion for one eco-friendly tour and volunteer opportunity I first learned about during our trip to Kaua'i last November.

Chocolate and More on Kaua’i
While researching tours and recreation options for a trip to Kaua'i, I came across Lydgate Farms, operated by a fifth-generation Kaua'i family and producing craft chocolates, vanilla beans and honey. (Hawai'i is the only U.S. state where cacao grows.) It took me all of 30 seconds to decide to sign up for a three-hour tasting tour, especially when I realized the farm was only a 15-minute drive from our accommodations in Kapa'a, on the island's east side.
Chocolate? Yes, Please!
We just got back from experiencing the Oregon Chocolate Festival in nearby Ashland, Ore. In its 14th year, the festival for the past three years has called the Ashland Hills Hotel & Suites home, and this was our first time experiencing the event there. One of the reasons we did not attend the past few years was how congested and uncomfortable the former site (the historic Ashland Springs Hotel in downtown Ashland) had become. The larger rooms and more open layout of the stylishly appointed retro mid-century hotel offered plenty of space for the large crowd to circulate among the vendor booths and sample the wares.
