Company, city: The Westin New York at Times Square, New York City
Number of employees: 500
Recent project: We teamed with Starwood Preferred Guest partner Audience Rewards for a series of exclusive on-property activations. One of our greatest assets is our location beside the Broadway theater district, and we were thrilled to bring our guests Broadway experiences ranging from a live performance of WICKED in the lobby to wake-up calls featuring the title character in Matilda – The Musical!
First job: At age 12, I was a dishwasher at Heidi’s Brauhaus in Mahopac, N.Y.
Little-known fact about you: I married my junior high school sweetheart. We’ve been married for 28 years and have four beautiful children.

Your Business

Essential business philosophy: Take care of your team members; take care of the guest. Always do the right thing and go the extra mile.

Best way to keep a competitive edge: Stay current with market trends. Know your competition. Be a trendsetter, not a follower. I look to see how we can be innovative and creative within our industry. That philosophy keeps you sharp and engaged about how to evolve your property to stay ahead of the curve.

Yardstick of success: We’re successful when our people enjoy what they do. When managers are passionate about their work, that enthusiasm cascades to all team members. Success also means exceeding our guests’ expectations. A building is a building, a bed is a bed; what truly defines our success is how well we serve guests and meet their needs.

What is your favorite destination in the world? Ireland makes me feel close to my family heritage. I love the culture, the history and the warmth of the people, plus some of the best golf and small pubs in the world.

About The Westin New York at Times Square

Tell us about recent enhancements and renovation at The Westin New York at Times Square.
We just completed a three-year, $33 million comprehensive renovation. In addition to refreshing our meeting space, we added 10 new premium deluxe rooms on the 23rd floor and completely renovated all guestrooms and suites. Every room now features new furnishings including a moveable desk, 47-inch LED TVs and redesigned bathrooms. One of the things we’re most proud of is the expansion of our energy conservation practices and our Green Seal Gold certification — the only hotel in New York City and one of only six properties in the country to receive this designation.

How does your property differentiate itself from other upscale hotels in Manhattan?
We distinguish ourselves through our service and by offering travelers a place to relax and unwind. Though we’re a stone’s throw from Times Square, Broadway and Restaurant Row, we provide a rejuvenating respite from the city with our signature Westin programs that promote well-being and relaxation.

What unique services and amenities does your hotel offer business travelers?
We help business travelers make the most of their time in New York City. Our on-site FedEx business center can accommodate any lastminute printing needs and 24-hour computer services. One of our most unique offerings is our Westin Experience Ambassador, a personal concierge who can assist with everything from arranging special occasions to obtaining theater tickets. Our fitness programs make it easy for business travelers to stick to their routine; our complimentary state-of-the-art WestinWORKOUT gym is open 24/7. We also offer New Balance gear lending, so travelers don’t have to pack workout clothes and sneakers, as well as guided RunWESTIN running maps.

Down to Earth: Find Your Element for the Ultimate Customized Spa Experience at Chuan Spa

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. We headed to The Langham Huntington, Pasadena for the 20th anniversary of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, which meant a jam-packed trip, but I managed to carve a little time out of our busy schedule to visit Chuan Spa at the hotel.

The Argosaronic Islands Are Calling

The Saronic or Argo Saronic Islands of Greece call travelers to explore its seven small islands and islets brimming with history, natural sites and more. With most easily accessible by boat, the islands’ proximity to ports of Athens make the Saronic Islands an ideal destination for those preferring shorter boat rides. In fact, trips from Athens ports to the islands take only between 10 minutes and two hours, depending on the island you choose, making them perfect for day or weekend trips. From Piraeus port, you can access Hydra, Spetses, Aegina and Poros directly. Come explore these stunning islands with us and find the inspiration to plan your next trip to these islands. Hydra Hydra town curves around a slope overlooking the Argosaronic Gulf like an amphitheater and is considered one of the most romantic destinations in Greece. Most unique to the island is its lack of vehicles. People on the island get around on mules and donkeys as well as water taxis, making for a peaceful and laid-back day. Hydra lies a two-hour ferry ride from Piraeus port in Athens.

Fukui: A Culture Hub in Rural Japan Worth the Detour

In many cases, less can be more in terms of what smaller cities and small-scale museums have to offer. This is true for Fukui Prefecture, located on the west coast of the main island and best known for its coastline, terrain and quiet towns. While major cities are awash with large-scale museums, bucolic Fukui Prefecture is worth a visit for its assemblage of institutions offering a deeper dive into Japanese life, history and culture.

Come Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas on a Trek in Uganda

Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.
