The southern Dutch city of Maastricht is one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands, and home to many art institutions and art fairs, including TEFAF Maastricht, Europe’s premier trade show for fine art.

Each spring, the city hosts TEFAF (The European Fine Art Foundation) Maastricht. From the moment TEFAF opened its doors in 1988, it has dedicated itself to presenting the world’s finest art under one roof. TEFAF is set within the stunning floral installations by Ten Kate Flowers and spectacular architectural design by Tom Postma.

Featuring 270 prestigious dealers from some 20 countries, TEFAF Maastricht is a showcase for the finest artwork currently on the market. Alongside the traditional areas of Old Master paintings, antiques and classical antiquities covering approximately half of the fair, you can also find modern and contemporary art, jewelry, 20th-century design and works on paper.  This year, TEFAF Maastricht runs March 11–19.

Other art venues in Maastricht are open year-round, offering interesting exhibitions in unique and beautiful surroundings. Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof, located in the center of the city, is a private photography museum housed in the Spanish government building, one of the oldest non-religious buildings in Maastricht.

Bonnefanten Museum, founded in 1884, houses its art collection in one of the most distinctive-looking modern buildings in Maastricht. Shaped somewhat like a spaceship, its glimmering cupola was designed by Italian architect Aldo Rossi. The museum offers interesting, eclectic rotating exhibitions and a wonderful permanent collection. Boekhandel Dominicanen, once a Dominican Church, is a magnificent 13th-century building now home to a busy bookshop.

There are many picturesque historical hotels in the city, including Teaching Hotel Château Bethlehem located in a centuries-old castle. In 2010, Château Bethlehem was completely renovated into a full-fledged hotel, with 26 guestrooms, a restaurant, bar, meeting rooms and public areas. The rooms in Teaching Hotel are furnished by both long-established and new  Dutch designers. Each of the rooms is different, and the hotel is a practical training environment for first-year students of the hotel school, where teachers monitor the students at every step of “learning by doing.” Double occupancy rates in March start at $157.

Down to Earth: Find Your Element for the Ultimate Customized Spa Experience at Chuan Spa

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. We headed to The Langham Huntington, Pasadena for the 20th anniversary of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, which meant a jam-packed trip, but I managed to carve a little time out of our busy schedule to visit Chuan Spa at the hotel.

Pickle Up: Get in on America’s Fastest Growing Sport

Early on, pickleball had something to do with pickles. Pickles the dog, that is. In one story, the game was named for a family dog that ran off with the ball between sets.

Come Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas on a Trek in Uganda

Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.

Healing in the Hinterlands: Relax and Renew Amid the Curative Nature of Southall Farm & Inn

This isn’t an ordinary Southern back porch kitted out with rocking chairs. Instead, at Southall Farm & Inn, I step out to stand beneath an overhang with vintage barn vibes but stylishly brandishing contemporary pizzaz. A row of glamorous sofa-esque loungers edge an inviting pool that stretches the length of the sitting porch, which might more aptly be dubbed a “soaking” porch. That’s because it holds a wondrous mineral bath, a house-built “natural spring pool” that brims with 60 essential minerals curated by experts with salts from South Africa and born from a momentous amount of research to mirror some of the world’s most curative geothermal springs. While soaking, I gaze upon the bounty of this working-farm-meets-5-star-wellness-resort, a 325-acre haven of healing repose.
