Arrival/Check-in: I arrived in Chicago, a city I have been to many times, only this time I was not staying in a traditional huge hotel but in a boutique hotel located right in The Loop and theater district at Washington and State streets. I was impressed that the lobby was not big but intimate and attractive, with a small front desk next to elevators and a restaurant. The check-in process was quick and easy, and the personnel were proper and friendly enough. I was soon on my way to the room. Even though there were bellmen, nobody helped with luggage or directions to the room. (28/30)

Guest Quarters: The place is beautiful, an architectural icon that was built in 1895 as the Reliance Building. It is a great work of glass and steel; its unique interior décor includes marble columns, terrazzo floors and beautifully designed steel elevators. My room was cozy and comfortable and featured all the amenities a guest might need. I had a comfortable bed — with a pillow menu so I could choose my favorite. The space also included a desk, a separate living room, honor bar, two televisions, a CD player and a great view from the big windows. A courtesy bottle of sparkling wine, chocolates and fruit were delivered to my room. There is WiFi in the hotel. (30/30)

Services/Amenities: The hotel, part of Kimpton Hotels, offers everything needed for a pleasant stay, from a 24/7 fitness center to a complete array of in-room spa services. An excellent wine service in the evening and morning coffee at the lobby are nice pluses, and the restaurant, Atwood Café, adjacent to the lobby, is a popular spot in the heart of the Loop. Not needed in my case, but the Burnham is well prepared to receive guests traveling with children and pets. It does not have a pool or spa. (39/40)

The Experience: I felt extremely comfortable and really loved my room. Having a drink in the living room before going out for dinner was nice, as was going down to the lobby for a glass of wine and having the time to chat with other guests. And, of course, it was nice to be able to just go down the elevator and grab a cup of coffee. The building itself is an architectural treasure and the location is superb, just a few blocks from the Chicago River or Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park. I would stay at the Hotel Burnham again.
