Talking Travel

by John Wroblewski

Apr 9, 2024

One of my hobbies is attending celebrity conventions. Over the years I have met hundreds of athletes, actors, musicians and other famous folks.

Along the way, I started interviewing them as a way to get extra access. Why settle for a quick greeting when I could get a few more minutes of quality time with them?

One thing I learned is these people liked to talk about things outside of their usual field. Since I work for Global Traveler, travel seemed to be a natural subject for interviews, and it was.AllieQuigley

Baseball players were my first tests. Not shocking, they all became more talkative when discussing their travels as opposed to the game. They enjoyed the change of pace. Many gave me much more time than I could have imagined. It was also fun for me hearing their travel tales, such as former baseball player Bob Brenly’s little book of restaurants, former Chicago Sky player Allie Quigley’s favorite Chicago foods, or ESPN’s Jon Miller’s world travels. I even got an amazing story from Pete Flynn, clubhouse manager for the New York Mets. Flynn drove the Beatles onto the field for their famous Shea Stadium concert.PeteFlynn

Earlier this year I had the idea to stretch these short interviews into long-form ones to add content to the Global Traveler YouTube channel. My first interview guest was singer Haley Reinhart. That interview received enough response to allow me to make Talking Travel a regular feature. Since then I interviewed 15 more folks from several professions.

Travel is the main focus of all of these. I learned about actor Andrew McCarthy walking 500 miles across Spain with his son, musician Suzi Quatro loving Hamburg so much she moved there, and so many other interesting nuggets from their lives away from their professions. Everyone I interview has an impressive résumé but also has great travel stories.Andrew McCarthy

It has been a lot of fun for me and hopefully the reader, too. If you know someone with amazing travel stories, let me know. You don’t have to be an Academy Award winner. You just need to share interesting travel stories. Also, subscribe to the GT YouTube channel to see all of the unique travel content.

Down to Earth: Find Your Element for the Ultimate Customized Spa Experience at Chuan Spa

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. We headed to The Langham Huntington, Pasadena for the 20th anniversary of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, which meant a jam-packed trip, but I managed to carve a little time out of our busy schedule to visit Chuan Spa at the hotel.

Fukui: A Culture Hub in Rural Japan Worth the Detour

In many cases, less can be more in terms of what smaller cities and small-scale museums have to offer. This is true for Fukui Prefecture, located on the west coast of the main island and best known for its coastline, terrain and quiet towns. While major cities are awash with large-scale museums, bucolic Fukui Prefecture is worth a visit for its assemblage of institutions offering a deeper dive into Japanese life, history and culture.

Come Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas on a Trek in Uganda

Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.
