Sketchbook Brewery and Taproom

by John Wroblewski

Aug 7, 2020

Last Friday, Sketchbook Brewery and Taproom opened in Skokie, Illinois, with a capacity crowd. Of course, my friends and I attended the grand opening.

The Sketchbook Brewery in neighboring Evanston has been in my regular rotation, especially during the Northwestern football season, but I got really excited when I saw a “Sketchbook Coming Soon” sign near my place. A cool new establishment is always welcome, especially since it is two blocks away.

Sketchbook Skokie features a wide-open, 4,000-square-foot interior and a 25-foot-high ceiling with a 60-foot curved bar as the centerpiece. Out front, a patio is surrounded by trees lit with solar lights. Sketchbook promotes its “no TV” vibe, a little odd at first, but actually a welcome change of pace.

The beverage menu includes historical styles, seasonal offerings, barrel-aged beers and sours, all brewed on site, plus kombucha and cider. I enjoyed a Honeybird honey and Thai basil ale and 2 Fools Cider. Eventually, I figure to work my way through the beverage lineup. Cans and growlers are available to go.

In lieu of a kitchen, Sketchbook partners with local caterers and food trucks. You are always welcome to bring in food, and I recommend a quick stop at nearby Village Inn to pick up a pizza or a few appetizers.

Opening weekend was the talk of our town. Sketchbook Brewery is quickly proving to be a big addition to downtown Skokie.

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. We headed to The Langham Huntington, Pasadena for the 20th anniversary of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, which meant a jam-packed trip, but I managed to carve a little time out of our busy schedule to visit Chuan Spa at the hotel.

Fukui: A Culture Hub in Rural Japan Worth the Detour

In many cases, less can be more in terms of what smaller cities and small-scale museums have to offer. This is true for Fukui Prefecture, located on the west coast of the main island and best known for its coastline, terrain and quiet towns. While major cities are awash with large-scale museums, bucolic Fukui Prefecture is worth a visit for its assemblage of institutions offering a deeper dive into Japanese life, history and culture.
