A couple years ago I made a resolution to try more restaurants. Since opening about a year ago, Sketchbook Brewery and Taproom has made that goal a lot easier by bringing other restaurants to me.
Sketchbook has featured many area restaurants through pop-up kitchens or food trucks. It’s a great way to sample house specialties of other local eateries while enjoying the large selection of home-brewed beers.
In recent weeks I tried La Cocinita Food Truck‘s Venezuelan-inspired arepas, bowls and tacos; Libertad‘s tostadas, ceviche and tacos and Soul & Smoke‘s sandwiches and skewers. Previously, Chicago Lunchbox, Kneads and Wants Artisan Bakery, NaKorn and Mustard’s Last Stand brought their specialties to Sketchbook.
Yesterday, Comida Cantina brought two kinds of tacos. The smoked turkey included green mole, shaved red onion, grape tomatoes and creamy romaine slaw. The other taco had wood-grilled summer vegetables, cauliflower queso, arugula, salsa fresca and pickled bell peppers. I tried one of each. Since I was undecided on which one was better, I had to go back and try each again. I’m still undecided . . . but not complaining.
Sketchbook regularly introduces new beers into their beverage lineup. A recent favorite of mine is Apfel Ale, a beer/cider hybrid based on Stephen King’s fictional Graf brew. Twelve apple varieties make it light and refreshing. Freedomish is another excellent new beer. A hibiscus saison with orange peel, it was brewed to commemorate Juneteenth, with 100 percent of the profits going to Skokie United and Evanston Present and Future.
I am trying all these new foods and restaurants, and the best part is I can enjoy all the food and refreshing beverages two blocks from my place on Sketchbook’s beautiful new patio. It’s a great way to spend a summer night.

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. In many cases, less can be more in terms of what smaller cities and small-scale museums have to offer. This is true for Fukui Prefecture, located on the west coast of the main island and best known for its coastline, terrain and quiet towns. While major cities are awash with large-scale museums, bucolic Fukui Prefecture is worth a visit for its assemblage of institutions offering a deeper dive into Japanese life, history and culture.

Come Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas on a Trek in Uganda
Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.
