“I’ll Have What She’s Having”: The Jewish Deli

One of the most memorable lines in any movie is “I’ll have what she’s having” from When Harry Met Sally. It is also the name of the newest exhibit at The Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.Holocaust Museum

Founded in 1981 as Holocaust Memorial Foundation, the foundation and storefront were a response to a Neo-Nazi group’s attempt to march through Skokie. With a founding principle to “Remember the past; Transform the future,” the mission is to preserve the legacy of the Holocaust, honor the memories of the victims and educate. In 2009 the museum moved to a new building at its present location.Holocaust MuseumHolocaust Museum

Organized by Skirball Cultural Center, “I’ll Have What She’s Having”: The Jewish Deli opened in Skokie last month and runs through April 14. The exhibit traces the journey of Jewish immigrants to America, where Jewish delicatessens became a staple of the American food scene.Holocaust Museum

Deli history is displayed through photographs, menus, uniforms, ads, video clips, neon signs and more. Museum chief curator of Collections and Exhibitions Arielle Weininger described the Jewish community generously lending or donating many original items for the exhibit.Holocaust Museum

One of the most interesting aspects was how stories intertwined. Familial and friend connections can be seen throughout the exhibit. There are also stories of complete strangers, who shared similar pasts, bonding and forging a new path together.Holocaust Museum

While the exhibit is historical, there are also sprinkles of humor, such as the disclaimer on the first wall panel listing past and present Chicago-area delis. The brainchild of Weininger, it basically tells the viewer not to kvetch about places missed.Holocaust Museum

This is the story of survivors of a horrific event staying strong and keeping their culture alive. It’s historically fascinating, inspirational and heartwarming. Weininger described it as a “giant warm hug,” an apt description.Holocaust Museum

Throughout our conversation I saw smiles, pride and a few tears from Weininger. Her emotions were an incredible reflection of the exhibit itself, also showing what the exhibit meant to her.Holocaust Museum

As a longtime resident of Skokie, a Chicago suburb comprised of about 30 percent Jewish residents, I know of their strong wills and sense of community. “I’ll Have What She’s Having”: The Jewish Deli is the perfect representation of their history and culture. I learned more about the Jewish community in one hour than I did in any religion class. It should be a field trip for every school (Jewish or not).Holocaust Museum

Down to Earth: Find Your Element for the Ultimate Customized Spa Experience at Chuan Spa

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. We headed to The Langham Huntington, Pasadena for the 20th anniversary of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, which meant a jam-packed trip, but I managed to carve a little time out of our busy schedule to visit Chuan Spa at the hotel.

Fukui: A Culture Hub in Rural Japan Worth the Detour

In many cases, less can be more in terms of what smaller cities and small-scale museums have to offer. This is true for Fukui Prefecture, located on the west coast of the main island and best known for its coastline, terrain and quiet towns. While major cities are awash with large-scale museums, bucolic Fukui Prefecture is worth a visit for its assemblage of institutions offering a deeper dive into Japanese life, history and culture.

Come Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas on a Trek in Uganda

Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.
