Did you know broad-spectrum sunscreen can reduce the skin from aging by more than 25 percent? Summer is here, and sun exposure is at its highest in July. Some excuses people use to avoid applying SPF products are that lotion is too greasy, it’s cloudy outside, I don’t burn, I’m naturally tan, I don’t have time, I work indoors, my skin gets irritated or it smells terrible. But applying sunscreen should be deemed a priority for those wanting to look youthful and healthy. I want to share some of my go-to sunscreen brands for outdoor activities, travel and everyday use. These are staples in my daily routine.

  • I start my day every morning with Tarte BB Tinted 12-Hour Primer with SPF 30. This product leaves my skin looking more even-toned, moisturized and gives me slight coverage from the sun. It isn’t as thick as a cover-up and leaves my skin feeling great all day. You can find this product at a local Sephora to test their different matte finishes and choose between a full size or a travel size.
  • One of my favorite sunscreen brands I recently discovered through a friend who spends a lot of time on boats is Soleil Toujours Clean Conscious Antioxidant Mist. I was pleased with the scent of the spray and felt it left my body protected in and out of water for several hours.
  • Unseen Sunscreen by Supergoop! is another product I have been satisfied using. It goes on extremely smoothly due to being invisible, weightless and scentless. They have several products I have yet to try but would recommend, such as the daily moisturizer and Play everyday lotion.
  • Another excellent option for a daily moisturizer if you want to avoid tints and primers is Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream with SPF 30. Not only does it moisturize your skin when you wake up, but it also protects it before heading out the door.
  • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer is my favorite low-cost sunscreen to pick up from a local drug store on my way to the beach. I feel the brand does a good job making products for those with sensitive skin, eczema and acne, and has something for all types.

During summer vacations, please remember that despite your skin type, age or the weather, if you’re not using sunscreen, you are significantly increasing your chances for cancer, wrinkles and sun spots.

Down to Earth: Find Your Element for the Ultimate Customized Spa Experience at Chuan Spa

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. We headed to The Langham Huntington, Pasadena for the 20th anniversary of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, which meant a jam-packed trip, but I managed to carve a little time out of our busy schedule to visit Chuan Spa at the hotel.

Fukui: A Culture Hub in Rural Japan Worth the Detour

In many cases, less can be more in terms of what smaller cities and small-scale museums have to offer. This is true for Fukui Prefecture, located on the west coast of the main island and best known for its coastline, terrain and quiet towns. While major cities are awash with large-scale museums, bucolic Fukui Prefecture is worth a visit for its assemblage of institutions offering a deeper dive into Japanese life, history and culture.

Come Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas on a Trek in Uganda

Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.
