Find Your Zen in Mexico City

by Maria Angeles

Mar 16, 2022

I am happy to report I finally ripped off the international travel Band-Aid! Getting into Mexico City was a breeze. Upon arrival, you receive your immigration form, whether from the airline or right at the customs line, and then you’re off to your Mexico adventures.

Mexico City is a place many head to for culinary gems like Pujol and Contramar. It is also a city full of architectural, cultural and artistic beauty. I am a Mexico City native or, as the locals say, a chilanga. I love going to Mexico City for the street food and art. My favorite part about the city is how walkable it is. It is much like New York City — you move much slower than in a car and can only experience the richness of living there by walking.

Mexico City

Give yourself the time to walk the city.

My favorite new discoveries:
1. Audiorama Parque España: After hours of walking, find yourself in a secluded part of the lush Parque España, Audiorama. This is a place where you can break away from the city and relax until sundown. Find yourself a comfortable swinging chair, close your eyes and let the Zen music do the rest. The best part? It’s free to the public!

Find your respite from the city at Audiorama.

2. La Otilia: I found this gem while looking for a place to work. La Otilia offers sugar-free and gluten-free delights. Despite the fatty foods you’ll find in the array of street foods, Mexico City has a strong healthy food game. To top it off, this Instagram-able establishment partners with local businesses for philanthropic fundraisers.Mexico City

Beautiful and tasty sugar-free cappuccino with coconut milk.

3. Street Vendors: No matter the day of the week or time of day, street vendors have your back, whether you’re looking for fruit, a post-dinner coffee or esquites (a Mexican delight). Mexico City

Mexico City

Walk through the city and find some fresh mango, esquites and post-dinner coffee.

Have you been to Mexico City recently? What are your favorites?

Down to Earth: Find Your Element for the Ultimate Customized Spa Experience at Chuan Spa

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. We headed to The Langham Huntington, Pasadena for the 20th anniversary of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, which meant a jam-packed trip, but I managed to carve a little time out of our busy schedule to visit Chuan Spa at the hotel.

Fukui: A Culture Hub in Rural Japan Worth the Detour

In many cases, less can be more in terms of what smaller cities and small-scale museums have to offer. This is true for Fukui Prefecture, located on the west coast of the main island and best known for its coastline, terrain and quiet towns. While major cities are awash with large-scale museums, bucolic Fukui Prefecture is worth a visit for its assemblage of institutions offering a deeper dive into Japanese life, history and culture.

Come Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas on a Trek in Uganda

Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.
