We all have a bit more time on our hands these days, and I am practicing social distancing by doing what I do best — reading. I calculated a few months ago I have read about 300-plus books in the last five of six years, which I almost find embarrassing … maybe I should get out more?

As I love to travel and my job affords me the chance to do so, I have come to love books set in different countries and, most importantly, different times, which gives me range with the types of books I read, from Greek mythology to historical fiction and science fiction. The list below shows the wide variety of books in my diet.

To keep you company during these weeks of social distancing, I thought I would share a few books that will take you to a different place and time. Enjoy.

Circe, Madeline Miller

All the Light We Can Not See, Anthony Doerr

Nefertiti, Michelle Moran

Pillars of the Earth, Ken Follet (three-book series)

Jawdaws, Ken Follett

The Things They Carried, Tom O’Brien

Valley of the Dolls, Jaqueline Susann

The Road, Cormac McCarthy

Winter World, A.G. Riddle (three-book series)

Fukui: A Culture Hub in Rural Japan Worth the Detour

In many cases, less can be more in terms of what smaller cities and small-scale museums have to offer. This is true for Fukui Prefecture, located on the west coast of the main island and best known for its coastline, terrain and quiet towns. While major cities are awash with large-scale museums, bucolic Fukui Prefecture is worth a visit for its assemblage of institutions offering a deeper dive into Japanese life, history and culture.
