Airlines, like many other industries deemed essential by the federal government, have gotten creative in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing, however, is not easily accomplished within the confines of an airplane.

Delta blocked middle seats for its main cabin, Comfort Plus and Premium Select seats on all flights. American Airlines instituted a “relaxed seating” policy, allowing passengers not to sit next to someone else. Most airlines have been flexible in seat reassignment to best facilitate social distancing. Obviously, if you are flying with someone, airlines will allow adjacent seating through some seat assignment shuffling.

Food and beverage service is also changing. Delta Air Lines, Southwest and American Airlines temporarily suspended beverage service and cut meal service. Other airlines are adjusting food and beverage services, as well. This will reduce costs but also limit the amount of physical interaction between flight attendants and passengers.

Despite the pandemic, people are still traveling and airlines are still flying. Everyone is making adjustments. There will be more changes, and some may be permanent, but ultimately people will always travel. The travel industry continues to evolve to meet travel needs.
