A Weekend in Indianapolis

by John Wroblewski

Jul 24, 2013

I spent the Fourth of July weekend in Indianapolis. My friend hosts a horror convention yearly, and I get to enjoy the Indy cuisine and attractions while there. At Days of the Dead, I caught up with old friend wrestler-actor Roddy Piper, talked to actress Linda Blair about her Linda Blair Worldheart Foundation and met rock legend Lita Ford.

Our trip started at an Indianapolis Indians game, where they beat the Louisville Bats 4–0. Victory Field, in downtown Indy, opened in 1996 and has been called “Best Minor League Ballpark in America” by several baseball publications. I would definitely put it in my top five. After the game, we enjoyed the Donato’s Downtown Freedom Blast, a fantastic fireworks show.

I just love downtown Indy. We spent a lot of time at White River State Park. Among the attractions within the park, we continued the sports theme by visiting the NCAA Hall of Champions. All 23 NCAA sports are represented in this two-story building. There are artifacts, video presentations, trivia challenges and much more. I am not even a big collegiate sports fan, but I had to enjoy the history and the way it was presented here.

We also took in some of the arts by venturing to Broad Ripple Village and the “Pedestrian Art,” murals created by local aerosol artists. They varied from funky to serious, but all were simply beautiful.

Of course, food always plays a big part of my trips, and every trip to Indy requires a stop at one of the El Rodeo restaurants. This year we picked their downtown location.

We also enjoyed a hearty breakfast at the City Café in downtown Indy. They serve big portions of farm-fresh ingredients.

Indianapolis is the 12th-largest city in the United States, yet it somehow maintains a small-town, relaxed feel. It is an easy 3.5-hour drive for me, and I generally make it to Indy three or four times a year for various events, and I always love it.

Down to Earth: Find Your Element for the Ultimate Customized Spa Experience at Chuan Spa

After a stressful pre-holiday season and a busy work schedule, there was no better time for a relaxing spa experience than during my recent trip to Pasadena with the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team. We headed to The Langham Huntington, Pasadena for the 20th anniversary of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, which meant a jam-packed trip, but I managed to carve a little time out of our busy schedule to visit Chuan Spa at the hotel.

Fukui: A Culture Hub in Rural Japan Worth the Detour

In many cases, less can be more in terms of what smaller cities and small-scale museums have to offer. This is true for Fukui Prefecture, located on the west coast of the main island and best known for its coastline, terrain and quiet towns. While major cities are awash with large-scale museums, bucolic Fukui Prefecture is worth a visit for its assemblage of institutions offering a deeper dive into Japanese life, history and culture.

Come Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas on a Trek in Uganda

Not a word was spoken as I settled into a cozy spot on the outdoor terrace just outside the main lodge at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge in Uganda. The air was so still the ice in my single malt seemed to echo off the forest in the distance as it clanked against the glass. I sat among a handful of fellow adventurers, each sitting silently beneath the night sky for one collective goal. Moments earlier, we learned a troop of mountain gorillas had made their way down the mountain near our lodge, and we left our meals to instead sit in eager anticipation of hearing the guttural grunts of the primates below. The chills on my arms never left me that night, even as I made my way up a stone pathway to my personal banda (guestroom). Thankfully, sleep came quickly for me that night as I drifted into dreams of what my next day would bring.
