Mary Gallagher, RN, MSN, CCRN

MARY GALLAGHER, MSN, RN, CCRN, is a patient health educator serving our veterans at the Wilmington, Delaware, VA Medical Center. Gallagher teaches veterans and staff and coordinates an online health portal, My HealtheVet, and 31 mobile apps to empower and engage our veterans in their healthcare. Gallagher has been a registered nurse for many years, working in various medical centers in southeastern Pennsylvania. Her clinical background includes medical, surgical, critical care and trauma nursing in a variety of clinical and management positions. She has written articles for the Nursing Spectrum and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. As Global Traveler’s Health columnist, Gallagher offers information and advice related to health issues and concerns readers may face while traveling. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family (she is one of seven children) and her friends. Gallagher reads a lot and enjoys discussing current events and good books. She likes to try out new restaurants in the Pennsylvania and Delaware areas. She currently resides in Broomall, Pennsylvania.

Flu Vaccines

THE FLU, ALSO KNOW AS INFLUENZA, is a respiratory infection caused by several viruses. The viruses pass through the air and enter your body through your nose or mouth. Between 5 and 20 percent of the U.S. population gets the flu each year. The flu can be serious or even deadly for elderly people, newborn babies, young children and individuals with certain chronic illnesses. The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

New Shingles Vaccine

IN OCTOBER 2017 the FDA approved a new shingles vaccine called Shingrix. This January, the Centers for Disease Control officially recommended adults 50 and older get the new vaccine instead of the previous vaccine, Zostavax.
